Glaucoma & Anterior Segment Diagnostics in Sola, Ahmedabad

Gold-Standard Eye Pressure Tonometry & Comprehensive Anterior Angle Evaluation

Evaluating intraocular pressure (IOP) and assessing the structural anatomy of the anterior chamber drainage angle are fundamental pillars in preventing irreversible glaucomatous optic nerve injury. Our Pressure & Angle Tests clinic provides gold-standard diagnostic precision to differentiate between open-angle, angle-closure, and secondary ocular hypertensive disorders.

Conducted directly by Dr. Parul Tripathi, MS (Ophthalmology)—a fellowship-trained glaucoma and vitreo-retina specialist—these direct clinical examinations determine whether your eye’s fluid drainage channels are open, narrow, or occluded, and verify if your baseline intraocular pressure falls within a safe, optic-nerve-protective range.

Our Pressure & Angle Diagnostic Procedures

01

Goldmann Applanation Tonometry (GAT)

Goldmann Applanation Tonometry remains the internationally recognized gold standard for measuring intraocular pressure. Performed at the slit lamp after instilling a gentle topical anesthetic and fluorescein dye, GAT calculates the exact force required to flatten a specific area of the cornea (Imbert-Fick law). This ensures precise, repeatable IOP measurements unaffected by the calibration errors common in automated screening devices.

02

Diagnostic Gonioscopy (Eye Angle Examination)

Because the anterior chamber angle cannot be seen directly through the curved cornea due to total internal reflection, a specialized mirrored contact lens (gonioscope) is placed on the eye. Gonioscopy allows 360-degree visualization of key anatomical drainage landmarks—including Schwalbe’s line, trabecular meshwork, scleral spur, and ciliary body band—to classify the angle as wide open, narrow, or closed.

03

Narrow Angle & Occlusion Risk Screening

Dynamic indentation gonioscopy is used to differentiate between appositional angle closure (temporary contact) and synechial angle closure (permanent scar adhesions). Identifying occludable angles early is critical for prescribing preventive Nd:YAG Laser Peripheral Iridotomy (YAG PI) before an acute angle-closure glaucoma attack occurs.

04

Corneal Pachymetry & Adjusted Pressure Profiling

Central Corneal Thickness (CCT) directly affects measured eye pressure: naturally thicker corneas can produce artificially elevated IOP readings, while thin corneas may mask dangerously high internal pressure. Combining ultrasonic pachymetry with applanation tonometry delivers an adjusted, true baseline pressure profile for accurate glaucoma staging.

Clinical Precision

Accurate angle classification and pressure tracking prevent sudden vision loss

A complete glaucoma evaluation requires both structural angle evaluation and accurate tonometry to customize treatment plans and safeguard your optic nerve.

Gold-Standard Accuracy

Goldmann applanation tonometry delivers clinical-grade accuracy, bypassing the variability common in non-contact air puff tests.

Angle-Closure Prevention

Diagnostic gonioscopy identifies narrow and occludable drainage angles before painful acute pressure spikes happen.

Comfortable & Fast

Performed with gentle topical numbing drops, ensuring exams are painless, smooth, and completed in just a few minutes.

FAQs

Pressure & Angle Tests FAQs

Goldmann Applanation Tonometry is the clinical gold standard for measuring intraocular pressure (IOP). Performed at the slit lamp using a gentle prism, it delivers higher accuracy and reliability than non-contact air puff tests.

Gonioscopy is a specialized diagnostic test using a mirrored lens to view the anterior chamber drainage angle of the eye. It is essential for determining whether glaucoma is open-angle or closed-angle and detecting narrow angles at risk of acute blockage.

No. Anesthetic eye drops are applied before the test to completely numb the ocular surface. You may feel slight touch or light pressure from the contact lens, but the test is not painful.

A thicker cornea requires more force to flatten, which can lead to an overestimation of actual IOP. Conversely, a thin cornea can cause an underestimation of eye pressure. Pachymetry allows us to calculate an adjusted, true baseline pressure.

In open-angle glaucoma, the drainage angle appears open, but the microscopic trabecular meshwork is clogged. In angle-closure glaucoma, the iris physically bunches up and blocks the drainage angle, preventing fluid outflow.

Patients diagnosed with glaucoma or ocular hypertension typically need pressure monitoring every 3 to 6 months. Gonioscopy is usually performed at baseline and repeated annually or whenever anatomical changes are suspected.
