Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) is a non-invasive, light-based imaging test that functions like an optical ultrasound. Eye Testing & Modern Imaging FAQs

An OCT scan is a rapid, non-contact imaging test that uses light waves to capture microscopic, cross-sectional pictures of your retina and macula, allowing doctors to view each individual retinal layer.

No. Both OCT and fundus photography are completely non-invasive and painless. No instruments touch your eye during the test; you simply focus on a target light while the machine takes the scan.

The scanning process itself takes only 2 to 3 minutes per eye. If pupil dilation is required for wider peripheral viewing, the dilation drops take approximately 20 to 30 minutes to take full effect.

Fundus photography creates high-resolution photographic documentation of the retina. This allows the doctor to track microaneurysms, hemorrhages, and vascular leakage across routine visits with objective comparison.

OCT scans measure the thickness of the Retinal Nerve Fibre Layer (RNFL) around the optic nerve. By detecting microscopic thinning of these nerve fibers, glaucoma can be diagnosed years before vision loss appears.

If your pupils are dilated for comprehensive retinal imaging, your vision may remain slightly blurry and sensitive to bright light for 3 to 4 hours. Having someone accompany you or drive you home is recommended.
