Glaucoma Consultation & Screening FAQs

In its most common form (open-angle glaucoma), the condition develops gradually without eye pain, redness, or early central vision changes. Peripheral vision is lost first, which is often unnoticed until significant optic nerve damage has already occurred.

Normal intraocular pressure generally ranges between 10 mm Hg and 21 mm Hg. However, some patients can develop glaucoma at normal pressure levels (Normal Tension Glaucoma), making optic nerve evaluations just as critical as pressure numbers.

High-risk groups include individuals aged 40 and older, those with a direct family history of glaucoma, people of high myopia, diabetic patients, and anyone with a history of long-term corticosteroid medication use or previous ocular trauma.

A thorough screening includes tonometry (measuring eye pressure), gonioscopy (evaluating the anterior drainage angle), pachymetry (measuring corneal thickness), dilated fundus exam of the optic nerve, and OCT RNFL imaging / automated visual field testing.

Glaucoma suspects or patients on active pressure-lowering drops typically require pressure checks every 3 to 6 months and automated visual field / OCT scans every 6 to 12 months, as recommended by Dr. Tripathi.

Optic nerve tissue cannot regenerate once lost, so glaucoma cannot be cured. However, early detection and diligent treatment through daily pressure-lowering drops, laser therapy, or surgery can successfully prevent further progression and preserve existing vision.
